Dr Frenzel specializes in breast augmentation surgery and spent an entire year in a specialized cosmetic surgery fellowship to learn the "art" or aesthetic breast surgery including the Transumbilical breast augmentation. He is one of only a few cosmetic surgeons in the country that performs this procedure.
Transumbilical breast augmentation, what is commonly known as “TUBA,” “Scarless” or even "belly button" breast augmentation is an effective method of breast implant placement that produces attractive results and scars that are literally invisible.
How is TUBA Breast Augmentation Performed?
Dr. Frenzel performs this operation by first making a small incision in the navel or belly button. He then creates a “tunnel” through the fatty tissue of the abdomen toward the breasts and the implant is then placed symmetrically behind the nipple, above or below the pectoral muscle. To provide a view of the patient’s underlying tissues during this procedure, a tiny fiber optic camera called an endoscope is used to ensure that the implants are properly positioned.
Is TUBA Breast Augmentation Safe?
Some have criticized the transumbilical method for its inherently “remote” technique, which doesn’t allow the surgeon direct access to the breasts. Although this seems like a reasonable objection, the results achieved with TUBA breast augmentation say otherwise.
Advantages of Belly Button breast augmentation
- Very little breast tissue is disturbed
- Incisions are far away from the placement of the implants, which can decrease the risk of infection.
- Breast augmentation scars are invisible
Disadvantages include those discussed above, and the fact that TUBA breast augmentation has a steep learning curve, requiring formal training and performance of many supervised surgeries before it can be mastered. This makes TUBA a difficult procedure to learn.
California cosmetic surgeon Jacob Haiavy, MD and William A. Brennan, MD published a study in 2007 that analyzed 245 patients of transumbilical breast augmentation, and found that the rate of complications was comparable to other breast implant placement methods.
Furthermore, one year after transumbilical breast augmentation, 95 percent of the patients were satisfied with the surgery and 86 percent were satisfied with the implant size chosen. Dr. Haiavy, an expert in the transumbilical breast augmentation, was a mentor to Dr. Frenzel as he undertook a full year advanced cosmetic surgical fellowship to train in the art of the “belly-button” breast augmentation procedure, and other cosmetic surgeries.
