Neck Lift

Neck lift surgery may refer to a variety of different procedures that aim to enhance the jaw line and eradicate fat and hanging skin below the chin. A well defined jaw is a very important contributor to overall facial attractiveness, and these procedures aim to achieve just that.

Platysmaplasty

An actual neck lift is a relatively rare surgical procedure, also known as a platysma-plasty. During neck lift surgery, part of the platysma muscle – the muscle that extends from the collarbone to the angle of the jaw - may be removed. Good candidates for this surgery include those who have a sagging platysma muscle and no sagging facial tissue, jowling, or excess skin on the neck. This combination of conditions is uncommon, thus, a strict neck lift is not common either.

Lower facelift

However, a lower facelift and liposuction of the neck are common and beneficial for many patients who do exhibit excess neck skin and fat such as a double chin or ‘turkey neck.’ Surgery may involve liposuction of the neck, tightening of the platysma, and removal of excess skin. Incisions are typically made in discreet locations behind the ear.

After Neck Lift Surgery

Although general anesthesia is preferred for this type of surgery, some cases may use I.V. sedation. After a neck lift, most patients have soreness, bruising, and a tight feeling in the neck. Recovery time is approximately two weeks, during which time a compression garment may be required to improve circulation, reduce swelling, and expedite the recovery process.
