CHIN AUGMENTATION A person’s chin ideally should fit the other
proportions of the face.
We inherit many characteristics including chin strength.
Some people have a chin that is too strong for their other facial
features; in which case, the chin would not need adding to or augmenting.
Instead, there are other procedures, sometimes surgical, that help to
improve an overpowering chin. A chin augmentation is needed when a person has a lack of
chin projection, which can affect his or her entire facial profile.
It can make one’s nose look larger than it really is, the lips look
less voluptuous, and the jaw line look too short.
If the problem is due to a deficient lower jaw development or a
mal-alignment of the teeth, perhaps oral surgery may be necessary.
However, in a majority of cases, the insertion of a small, synthetic
implant placed in front of one’s chin bone, is a relatively minor procedure,
which can correct a weak chin and improve one’s profile. Many times, a chin augmentation
is combined with a rhinoplasty (nasal enhancement) to improve one’s profile
symmetry or with a facelift to improve the loss of projection, which may occur
with aging. It may also be used in
conjunction with facial liposuction, where fat is removed from the jowl and neck
to enhance the jaw line. ABOUT THE IMPLANTS Chin
implants are made of a solid, Silastic material, which does not leak nor need to
be replaced (unless so desired). Chin
implants have improved greatly over the years, coming in a variety of sizes and
shapes and contoured to resemble the natural chin. There is even a special implant that adds no projection to the chin but
fills in the indentions some people have on each side of the chin, providing a
smoother, more attractive jaw line. ABOUT THE SURGERY Although a chin implant can be placed through a small incision in the mouth or underneath the chin, Dr. Miles prefers to use the chin incision. This heals beautifully, rarely shows, and allows for better positioning and less chance of infection than the oral approach. Once the sterile implant is positioned correctly, the incision is sutured closed. Dr. Miles has special methods to ensure the implant is incorporated by the tissue and does not move out of place. This
relatively minor outpatient procedure is performed in our fully-accredited
surgery facility under local anesthetic with mild IV sedation. The
surgery takes between one and two hours. AFTER THE
SURGERY Healing
time is generally very quick, and there is little, if any, discomfort. However,
the chin area may feel numb for several months. Click Here to see before and after examples of this procedure. Visit our plastic / cosmetic surgery offices located in Dallas and Fort Worth, Texas (TX). |
