BREAST REDUCTION
Very large, heavy breasts often require a breast
reduction. Many women feel that the
excess weight of the breasts causes back and neck pain as well as soreness in
the shoulder from bra straps cutting into the skin. Some insurance companies
will cover this procedure, considering it medical rather than cosmetic. You should check with your individual policy.
In a traditional breast reduction, excess breast
tissue is removed through an
incision similar to that used in an extensive breast lift, which involves making
an incision around the areola, extending it down and around the lower crease of
the breasts. This reshapes the breasts while lifting and reducing the size.
In mild to moderate cases, “SAL” or
suction-assisted lipectomy (liposuction removal) can be performed with less
bleeding and a faster recovery than with traditional methods. While it does reduce breast volume, it does not reshape or lift the
breasts to any extent, and therefore, is usually accompanied by a
breast lift.
